RSL Oakey Sub Branch History

What is the RSL?

The initials RSL stand for Returned & Service’s League. The organisation was initially formed as a support group for Returned Service Personnel, their families and the families of those lost in the line of duty.

The RSL organisation itself was formed in 1916 when the first members of the 1st AIF started returning to Australia after the Gallipoli Campaign. These soldiers realised that there was no assistance available to the families of the Diggers who had been killed in Gallipoli. These soldiers got together and formed an organisation to assist the families of their mates and those who returned with shocking injuries and disabilities, such as missing limbs, shell shock, etc....

Since then, the RSL has become one of Australia’s largest support based organisations, providing millions of dollars back into the community through Hospitals, Retirement Homes, Charities and Sporting Groups.

Oakey’s History

The RSL Oakey Sub Branch was formed on the 25th of April 1934 by Sailors and Solders from World War 1. Members of the three Services later strengthened it after World War 2. Service men and women from later conflicts, including Korea, Malaya, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Rwanda, The Gulf, Somalia and East Timor increased membership.

The Oakey RSL has been active for the last 80 years in support of War Widows, Legacy, The Salvation Army and The Anzac Youth Club; it actively supports the commemoration of Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and Vietnam Remembrance Day.

The RSL provides advice on pensions, welfare and assists in obtaining these benefits for past and present service personal.

The Oakey RSL building was opened on 19th of December 1953 by Sir John Lavarack Governor General of Queensland and further renovated in 1982. The major refurbishment of the Club was completed 27th May 2000 and was opened by Mr Ray De Vere M.C.O.A.M. President of the RSL (Queensland Branch).
